INSULATION FOR AIR CONDITIONING OF A MODEL OFFICE BUILDING

Materials: K-FLEX ST PLUS, K-FLEX AL CLAD 

This is a special installation for demonstration purposes to show the greatest possible range of insulation techniques and so extra valves were fitted to the pipework and operating system in the building. The air conditioning unit itself is outside the building and therefore it was important to protect the insulation and pipework against UV radiation and corrosion. The variety of installations offered the insulating technicians a particular challenge where they were able to demonstrate what they have learned in three years of training.
With regard to insulating air conditioning systems, there are two main requirements:
> to avoid condensation and protect the plant against corrosion.
> energy conservation, as it is well known that the cooling process consumes far more energy than heating systems.
The cold air generated by the air conditioning unit travels through pipes to the inside of the building. From here, the pipework branches out to the respective rooms. After using the ISOCALC program to calculate the dew point, the technician selected K-FLEX ST PLUS insulation with a wall thickness of 19mm for the interior. With a thermal conductivity of λ0°C = 0.33 W/(m·K) and water vapour diffusion resistance of 10,000μ, K-FLEX ST PLUS is ideal for refrigeration applications. Components, such as bends, angle seat valves, flanges, dirt traps and heat exchangers can be professionally installed using flexible, easily installed K-FLEX elastomeric material.

Outside, the technician chose a double-layered installation of K-FLEX ST PLUS in conjunction with a K-FLEX AL-CLAD cladding. The carbon steel pipe was insulated with the first layer to compensate for the difference between the narrow diameter of the tube and the wider diameter of the compression sleeves. The second layer of K-FLEX ST PLUS provided a smooth rounded surface, ready to be covered with the K-FLEX AL-CLAD jacket. This elastomeric insulation combination provides the ideal protection against UV rays and mechanical damage in any external application. K-FLEX AL-CLAD is an easily installed alternative to traditional metal cladding and using prefabricated K-FLEX AL-CLAD sheets significantly reduces installation time.
